The National University Agraria La Molina is a governmental institution of higher education, integrated by professors, students and graduates dedicated to academic studies, research and teaching, as well as to the dissemination of knowledge and cultural values to the society. The university is autonomous in its academic activities and administration as assured by the Law N° 23733. The institution was created more than 100 years ago with the purpose to contribute to the integral formation of men and to help in the transformation and the development of the country and a just society; to form scientists and professionals with high academic qualifications, and great social and humanitarian dedication; to promote, organize and conduct scientific, humanitarian and technological research and to help to defend, conserve and sustainably manage natural resources for the benefit of the country. Its legal representative is the Rector. The university not only owns a main campus, but also different centres for research, teaching, experimentation, animal/plant production and services.

UNALM is structured into faculties, a postgraduate school, and regional institutes for development and research. It also owns consultation offices to help in administration and academic work and it has production units. The faculties are structured into academic departments. UNALM conducts its activities of interdisciplinary research and public dissemination via its faculties and research institutions. It has regional institutes at the coast, in the mountains and in the rain forest. It has 8 Faculties (Agriculture, Sciences, Economy and Pacification, Nutrition Industry, Agricultural Engineering, Forestry Sciences, Fisheries and Zootechnology) and 23 academic departments. The fisheries faculty was created more than 30 years ago and has a total of 31 lecturers of which 9 are principal professors, 12 associated professors, 2 helping lecturers and 8 professors with special contracts. Of this academic personnel, 3 hold a PhD, 8 a M.Sc., obtained abroad in Germany, the Netherlands, Chile, England and Japan. The faculty has 478 students involved in the new curriculum. Since 1967 the faculty has been conducting research and development projects in the areas of agriculture, aquaculture, artisanal fisheries, product transformation, marine ecology, environmental sciences, and coastal resource evaluation and management. Projects are sponsored by national and international institutions such as MIPE, INRENA, IFS, JICA, USAID, UNDP, AWI, ZMT, VW, GTZ, among others. At present a new faculty structure is discussed which is comprised of the 2 departments (1) Aquaculture and fishing industry and (2) fishery management and environment.

UNALM has an administration unit and subordinated services. The administration system is centralized and gives its services to the faculties. It is directed by the administrative vice rector, who is the head of the offices for planification, economy, personnel and general services.
