| Particle fluxes and biogeochemical cycles related to variations in the water column (e.g., the oxygen minimum zone) and the atmosphere (e.g., ENSO). |
Abstract: |
| Particle fluxes in the ocean provide valuable information on biological and physical processes along the water column and the links between the ocean, the atmosphere and the continent. The relation of the biogenic and lithogenic fluxes composing the total mass flux and their main constituents reflect to a great extent biological and physical processes occurring at the upper layers of the ocean and their influence on the pelagic and benthic environments.
Within the frame of CENSOR, I will develop a Ph.D. thesis on the particle fluxes and their relation to environmental variables off Chipana Bay (H21ºS). To estimate such fluxes, I will work on the deployment and maintenance of mooring arrays with sediment traps, current meters, CTD and oxygen sensors in Chipana Bay and its oceanic vicinities for at least two years. The results will be related to ongoing time-series studies on physical (e.g., currents, temperature and salinity) and biological variables (e.g., phyto- and zooplankton abundances) and parallel experiments performed within the frame of work packages 1, 2 and 3.
The results of my work will contribute to the assembly of a comprehensive picture of the Humboldt Current System which may enlighten our knowledge on the highly productive eastern boundary current systems.
I will work with the assistance of many colleagues from several countries but mainly under the supervision of Enrique Isla at the Institut de Ciéncies del Mar in Barcelona. |
