| Successful conduction of CENSOR Training course on Combined Climate-Fisheries Models at IMARPE/Paita (March 5-7, 2007)
The 3 days-course “Application of Surplus Production Models on Marine Resources Considering a Variable Environment” was given by PhD. student Friedemann Keyl and Prof. Dr. Matthias Wolff from March 5-7, 2007, at the IMARPE office (Instituto del Mar del Perú) of Paita in the province of Piura (North Peru). The course formed part of the activities conducted by work package 4 of CENSOR and represented the 5th training course in a sequence over the past two years. It was taught to 15 Peruvian scientists and university professors involved in the evaluation and management of Peru’s marine resources, which are greatly affected by climate variability (e.g. ENSO).
The course consisted of a general introduction into stock assessment (first day), followed by computer-aided group work using state-of-the-art methodologies to combine the Surplus Production Approach (SPA) with time series of environmental data (second and third day) (see “Triptico”, on CENSOR web page for details). Course participants greatly differed in their backgrounds and knowledge, but all participated actively in the course. Many participants contributed own data sets to the practical work at the computers, proving their great interest in the course. The three days proved to be rather short and many participants asked for a continuation of the course to deepen their knowledge on time series analysis and multivariate statistics useful in fishery research.
